Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Chrome Introduces Vertical Tabs to Simplify Tab Management

Chrome Introduces Vertical Tabs to Simplify Tab Management:

After years of hesitation, Google Chrome is finally rolling out vertical tabs — a feature that has gained popularity in newer browsers like Arc. This update allows users to move their tabs from the top of the browser to a sidebar, making it easier to view full page titles and organize multiple tabs more efficiently.

Once activated, vertical tabs will stay enabled by default unless the user decides to switch back. Alongside this, Chrome is also refreshing its Reading Mode, offering a cleaner, distraction-free experience for reading content.

These updates reflect how increasing competition from modern browsers is shaping Chrome’s evolution. By adopting features that users appreciate elsewhere, Chrome may reduce the appeal of alternative browsers trying to stand out with unique tools.

Users can enable vertical tabs anytime by right-clicking on the browser window and selecting “Show Tabs Vertically.” There’s no fixed limit to how many tabs can be open, aside from what a user’s device can handle. The feature works seamlessly with existing tab groups and across multiple windows.

Vertical tabs are especially useful for heavy users who keep many tabs open, as they help reduce clutter and make it easier to locate specific pages — particularly when several tabs from the same website look similar.

While Chrome had experimented with this idea in the past without fully launching it, renewed interest and competition in the browser space have likely driven its return and official release.
