Jack Draper Ready to Lead British Tennis at Australian Open After Breakthrough Year

For the first time since 2004, a new tennis season will begin without a certain Scottish star on the professional circuit. Yet, despite Andy Murray’s absence, the sport is still abuzz with talk of him. Jack Draper, the new British No. 1, shares his thoughts on Murray’s return to tennis, this time as Novak Djokovic’s coach. Draper believes it will be fascinating to see how the dynamic between Murray and Djokovic unfolds. "It’s amazing for the sport," Draper says, adding that Murray’s immense love for the game and tactical knowledge will make him an exceptional coach.

While Murray’s coaching role generates excitement, Draper is set to lead the British charge at the Australian Open starting on January 12. Despite Murray’s long reign at the top, Draper is determined to step up and embrace his position as the new face of British tennis. "I want that responsibility," says Draper. "I’m not afraid, and I’m not going to go into my shell. I’m focused on improving and I hope to be one of the top players in the world."

The 23-year-old’s confidence stems from a breakthrough year that saw him claim two titles in Stuttgart and Vienna, reach the US Open semi-finals, and rise to No. 15 in the world. However, Draper’s personal highlight of the year came not from a triumph but from a moment of adversity. After a disappointing first-round loss at the French Open, Draper reflected on his mindset and emerged stronger, transforming himself into a more resilient player. Looking ahead, Draper is eager to close the gap between himself and the top players, like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who dominated the Grand Slams in 2024. "They're not afraid to put their tennis on the line," Draper notes, emphasizing the mental toughness required to compete at the highest level.
