Bureau of Meteorology that temperatures in Melbourne
The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted that temperatures in Melbourne will soar to 40°C on Boxing Day, prompting fans to prepare for the heat alongside stars such as Nathan Lyon (as depicted). Officials will assess the heat stress risk index prior to the match on Thursday and will take appropriate measures. This forecast stands in stark contrast to the rain-affected Boxing Day Test of 2023, although it is unlikely to reach the extremes witnessed during the 2018 Ashes Test in Sydney, where temperatures peaked at 43 degrees.
The conditions on the Boxing Day Test wicket are expected to excite Indian cricket sensation Jaspreet Burma, despite the anticipated sweltering heat at the MCG on the first day. Depending on the duration of the fourth Test between Australia and India, Melbourne Cricket Club chief executive Stuart Fox has indicated that total attendance could exceed 250,000.
In recent years, the MCG has made a concerted effort to create Test pitches that are more conducive to pace bowlers. Head curator Matt Page was asked whether who has been the standout bowler in the series thus far, would be satisfied with the pitch prepared. "All the top bowlers are enthusiastic when they arrive here now. The pitch performs well for us," Page remarked on Monday. "It likely means the pitch will quicken up more rapidly than it would at 20 degrees," he added. "Whether we retain a bit more moisture in the pitch is uncertain at this point," he stated. "We will continue to monitor the weather and adjust our preparations accordingly." India has been training at the MCG for several days, and there are whispers from their camp regarding the quality of the net wickets. In response, Page noted that the preparation of the net wickets is standard practice leading up to Boxing Day.
