A man armed with a machete was apprehended while attempting to gain entry to the U.S. Capitol shortly before Donald Trump's anticipated visit. Trump intends to pay tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, whose remains are currently lying in state within the rotunda of the Capitol ahead of his state funeral scheduled for Thursday. Additionally, several of his Cabinet nominees, including Pete Hegseth, RFK Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard, have been visiting Senate offices throughout the day. Capitol Police reported that the individual wielding the machete, who also attempted to bring in three knives, was arrested around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, just hours prior to Trump's arrival.

The president-elect is also set to meet with senators to discuss his Cabinet selections and forthcoming legislative priorities, such as immigration reform and the implementation of tax cuts. Capitol Police confirmed the arrest in a post on X on Wednesday afternoon. "Our officers detained and arrested a man who attempted to bring a machete into the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC)," the initial post stated. "During the security screening at the north entrance of the CVC, our officers detected a machete in the man's bag, halted the x-ray machine, apprehended the individual, and secured the machete." However, authorities discovered more than just the machete.

President-elect Donald Trump addressed the media during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, in Palm Beach, Florida. Authorities disclosed that "three knives were also found in the bag, in addition to the machete." "Security screening was temporarily halted at the north side of the Capitol Visitor Center while we conducted our investigation." The individual, whose identity has not been released, is facing "multiple charges of Carrying a Dangerous Weapon."

The Capitol Police indicated that further information will be provided. This alarming announcement comes just hours before Trump is scheduled to pay his respects to the remains of former President Carter in the Capitol Rotunda. The late president is currently lying in state, an honor reserved for distinguished deceased politicians. Trump's visit had been arranged in advance and was publicly announced prior to the incident. While authorities have not disclosed a motive for the occurrence, the situation remains under scrutiny.
