A historical mosaic featuring a Bible verse that offers blessings to all who read it has been uncovered

Archaeologists have unearthed a monastery that dates back 1,500 years, featuring a detailed mosaic floor inscribed with a Bible verse that offers blessings to all who read it.The inscription, written in ancient Greek, states, "Blessed are you when you come in and blessed are you when you go out," and is prominently displayed at the center of the elaborately crafted floor. This significant discovery was reported by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) on Monday, highlighting it as one of the largest and most important archaeological sites from this era found in the vicinity of Kiryat Gat, Israel. The monastery is believed to have been constructed during the fifth to sixth centuries CE, a period characterized by the dominance of the Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire. This era witnessed the expansion of Christianity and the establishment of notable religious structures, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The newly found monastery is situated within an ancient settlement that originated during the earlier Roman period and continued to thrive for approximately 600 years until the conclusion of the Byzantine era. "This site represents the largest and most significant Roman and Byzantine period discovery in this region," stated excavation leaders Shira Lifshitz and Maayan Margulis. The excavation also revealed the remains of at least ten buildings, a winepress, and a substantial warehouse structure.
The 'blessing' refers to a floor from an ancient structure. The monastery holds particular importance due to its mosaic floor, which represents a groundbreaking discovery. "The mosaic uncovered in Kiryat Gat is among the most exceptional ever located in Israel," stated Mark Avrahami, head of artistic conservation at the IAA. This mosaic is distinctive due to the use of very small stones within its geometric design, which accentuates the cross-shaped motifs, as noted by the researchers. Alongside a biblical verse, the floor showcases crosses, lions, doves, an amphora (a ceramic jug used for maritime transport), floral designs, and geometric patterns.

"Transferring mosaics is a complex endeavor that demands considerable skill and precision," Avrahami remarked, adding that the floor will soon be relocated to the IAA's mosaic workshop for preservation before being exhibited to the public in Kiryat Gat. The excavation also revealed a substantial number of artifacts from the monastery and its vicinity, including imported goods, coins, marble fragments, and metal and glass vessels, all of which reflect the affluent and significant community that once thrived there, according to the researchers. The settlement is positioned at a key road junction linking the mountainous region to the coastal plain, likely serving both the local smaller settlements and passing travelers. "The discoveries suggest a continuous habitation from the early Roman period (1st century CE) through to the conclusion of the Byzantine period (end of the 6th century CE)," the research team reported.
